Think of the Children!

Ever since I really started reading the Bible, actually paying attention to what it says instead of simply believing in it, I have been fairly disturbed by the fact that people read this to their children. Can you imagine any other story featuring rape, genocide, infanticide, murder and incest that anyone would find acceptable for children? Yeah, me neither.

This person has her children copying the Torah (Old Testament, if you were raised Christian) as part of their homeschooling. And this is the portion her daughter copied.

10When you go to war against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives, 11if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her as your wife. 12Bring her into your home and have her shave her head, trim her nails 13and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month, then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.

Allow me to translate that for you: If you, a soldier, see a pretty woman while slaughtering your enemies, you may kidnap and rape her, after shaving off her hair and cutting her nails. She is now your wife. If you grow bored of raping her, you can kick her out and leave her with nothing. But don't sell her into slavery, because that's just wrong.

Yes, that's totally appropriate reading material for a small girl.

  1. While reading through the archives of Reading and Critically Reviewing the Bible in 365 Days, I got my first chance to really examine word for word some of the more gruesome Old Testament passages. Like, whoa. It scares me that people actually take this book as word-for-word God-given truth. I mean, that makes God a psychopath. Fo' rilz.

  2. CN - worse than a psychopath. from what i can tell, God ENJOYS causing hell on earth in the OT...

    i remember this passage.
there were a couple of years where my mother was rabidly and fanatically trying to force me to convert to Christianity. at first, i went along, pretending for her sake. it was this passage, and the one where Lot offers his 2 virgins daughters to a mob - TO BE GANG RAPED - if only they wouldn't "bother" his "guest". or rather, if only they would ignore the fact that he broke city law by bringing a non-citizen after the gates of the city were closed for the night. so, in effect, Lot offered to allow city officials, and the "mob" gathered to back them, to gang rape his 2 YOUNG [early teens] virginal daughters if only they didn't punish him for breaking the law.
and then God nuked the city because it tried to enforce the laws that had been created to keep citizens safe [i don't know that i completely AGREE with the law, but it *IS* the law, and it was created to protect the citizens]

that was when i quit "going along" because they kept trying to JUSTIFY RAPE.
